In Touch With Tanja Barnes
Spring 2002 Newsletter

Happy Spring everyone! Time for some spring cleaning...down to a cellular level.

In this newsletter, I'm highlighting Kelli Graves, a fabulous aesthetician I've known for years. I've personally enjoyed facials from Kelli and have had glowing results that lasted over a week!

Kelli is currently offering an introductory rate to new clients. For $25.00 you receive a full facial, first visit only. This offer is only good for facials only.

Best,
Tanja

P.S. Please tell her I sent you because I want her to feel safe about who's coming to see her and where they came from. To reach Kelli: kelli@fabframer.com

A Word from Kelli

Hi!! My name is Kelli, and I am a State Licensed Esthetician, or more simply put, a Skin Therapist. My main areas of interest are facials, waxing and make-up application. Tanja has graciously given me an arena, in which to share my passion with you, which is healthy skin. Specifically, YOUR healthy skin.

Our skin is our bodies' first layer of defense. It is a living, breathing organ. It needs care. Most of us are on the go constantly, rushing to work, to class, to daycare, to the party, taking care of our partners, kids, and pets, trying to get the shopping and the laundry done (my personal bane!). Often times, we don't get enough sleep, we don't drink enough water, we don't eat properly and we certainly don't take enough time outs and just sit still and re-energize, to give our bodies a much-needed rest. Skin care needn't be mysterious, difficult, expensive, nor time-consuming I would like to provide you with some simple, quick, and fun skin care tips.

Let's start with a basic: How to cleanse your face, and with what. After cleansing, spritz with a non-alcohol toner and apply a moisturizer.

1. What do you cleanse your face with? Is it soap, designed for your entire body, or is it a cleanser designed specifically for your face? If you are washing with soap, get rid of it!! There is a huge difference between soap and cleanser. I highly recommend Dermalogica or Origins, or, your local market carries several alternatives such as Dove bar, Noxzema and pHisoderm and CetapHil.

2. Using a terrycloth washcloth? Get rid of it! They are very abrasive and full of germs. If you don't' feel clean without some kind of cloth, micro-fiber washcloths used once and laundered will do. Ideally, use your hands, palms and fingertips.

3. Use warm water to wet your face, and spread your cleanser. Repeat each movements 3 times for best results. Start with scissor-like movements across the jaw line. Move up the cheeks, with flat palms to make big circles (fingertips can lightly work problem areas such as cheekbones). With fingertips, make 3 circles around the eyes, first above the brow bone, then the middle of the forehead and lastly the hairline. Come down to your nose, using light pressure and fingertips, circleover the entire nose, including the nose-cracks. light circles across the upper lip and around the mouth finish it. Rinse with warm water and repeat. The best results will come from cleansing twice: the first to removes surface dirt and make-up the second gives a deeper cleansing.

Dryness? Flaky Skin? This is the main skin problem my clients are experiencing this month. Our first instinct when we see those flakes is to exfoliate. DON"T!!! Most exfoliants are drying and will only aggravate the condition. I recommend a light enzyme peel, coupled with an intensive moisturizing treatment such as a paraffin mask or thermal, deep penetrating moisture mask. At home, in a pinch, you can use the following:

1 teaspoon lemon juice
_ cup seedless grapes,
_ cup chopped cranberries (preferably fresh but frozen will do)
_ pack of gelatin or
_ cup yogurt;

mix all ingredients in a blender on med speed for 20-30 seconds, until you have a chunky paste. If you are using the gelatin, refrigerate for half hour so it can set up a bit. Apply it to you face and let sit for 10-15 minutes, depending on your skin sensitivity. Rinse off with warm water.

The active enzymes in the fruits will help exfoliate the dead, flaky skin, leaving it polished and soft, and yogurt, or gelatin, is a fantastic moisturizer. Quick, easy, and inexpensive.

Other simple fixes for dry, dull skin:

1. Hydrate from the inside! Drink more water! Water is the go juice for our bodies. We can survive for weeks without food, but only days without water.

2. Get a water filter for your shower. The same stuff you won't drink is what you are washing your body with. Home Depot sells a $20 shower filter made by Sprite ShowerX called the Slim Line. You will be amazed at the difference in your skin and hair.

3. Moisturize! Moisturize! Moisturize! Only the oiliest skin needn't moisturize daily. Moisturizers add an extra layer of protection against pollutants (and UV damage if you use one with SPF), and help plump up fine lines and wrinkles, thus minimizing them.

OK! I have rambles on long enough. If you would like more beauty tips please go to my website at www.shinyhappyfaces.com and browse around, or click the email icon to ask a question or be added to my bi-weekly tips sheet. You can also request an appointment for a facial, waxing services or make-up lessons. Thanks for giving me some of your time, and I hope to hear from lots of you soon!!

Best,
Kelli
